Press Release
Statement of the Embassy of Cuba in South Africa on the UN vote on Resolution condemning the US blockade against Cuba

26 October 2011

For the twentieth time the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the resolution "Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba" thus completing a cycle of consecutive annual condemnation of the U.S. blockade on Cuba imposed since almost half a century.

On this occasion, 186 countries voted in favor of the resolution presented by Cuba on the matter, compared to only U.S and Israel voting against and the abstentions of Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau.

Weeks before the voting, during the high level segment of the 66 ordinary session of the UN General Assembly, around 50 leaders of various countries demanded the lifting of U.S. blockade against Cuba

The statements renewed yesterday by various delegations acknowledged that the U.S. measures against the Caribbean island has persisted and intensified despite the increasing and strong call of the international community for a change of that policy. An overwhelming majority of the delegations supported the call for the elimination of the blockade and appeal to the United States to hear the claim of countries all over the world and comply with the resolutions adopted by the UN General Assembly.

The Embassy of Cuba would like to express its deepest appreciation to all the Governments that supported Cuba at the UN and to all the peoples and individuals that have backed along the years the struggle of the Cuban people against the blockade.

The Embassy pay special tribute to all African countries that have once again close ranks demanding in the General Assembly the right of the Cuban people to decide its own future.

Together with all the people of goodwill all over the world and all governments committed to the defense of the International Law, Cuba will continue to demand the immediate and unconditional lifting of the US blockade.
