Reflections and Insights on Peacebuilding
198 Methods of Nonviolent Action
Far too often people struggling for democratic
rights and justice are not aware of the full range of methods on
nonviolent action. Wise strategy, attention to the dynamics of
nonviolent struggle, and careful selected methods can increase
societies and movements chance of successful campaigns and
initiatives.
Gene
Sharp researched and catalogued 198 methods and provided a rich
selection of historical examples in his seminal work: The Politics of
Nonviolent (Vol 3) Boston: Porter Sargent, 1973.
Analytical Tools for Understanding Conflict
The tool assists in helping organisations to think through how their programme will affect the dynamics of conflict in the context in which they are working. Meta-Theory in Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding
This essay contribution to the field of meta-theory and approaches to social research is informed by a particular understanding of the world we live in. The understanding expressed in this essay, that meta-theories serve as a set of overarching and often invisible frameworks that shape and govern the way we understand, describe and attempt to influence the world around, is in itself expressive of a particular meta-theoretical view of the world.
Whose policy and why is it foreign?
Exploring the impact of civil society influence on SA foreign policy
The foreign policy adopted by a state is traditionally seen as falling exclusively within the domain of the state itself. However, civil society often finds itself at odds with a particular policy, with ideas of more effective policies, or with other interests of its own that require attempts to influence policy. This chapter forms part of an action-research and information dissemination project entitled ‘Consensus-building Approaches and Policy Coordination Mechanisms: Responsive and Responsible Policy Formulation and Implementation in South Africa’.
